There’s a moment in every project where things click—the pattern, the space, the feeling you’re after. That’s where our tile begins.

Motawi tile isn’t pulled from a shelf and trimmed to fit. It’s made to belong to a space—one that’s been measured, considered, and designed with intention.

Plan Your Order

Start with the Space

Before ordering, it’s important to know the exact dimensions of your installation area.

Because our tiles are handcrafted and often part of a larger layout, we don’t recommend ordering extra with the expectation of cutting to fit later. Instead, the goal is a layout where the tile fits the space—not the other way around.

Determining tile quantities and layout is part of our design services. It’s how we ensure the final installation feels balanced, complete, and true to the design.

Cutting Tile: When It Works (and When It Doesn’t)

In some cases, tile can be cut—typically in areas where edges will be hidden, like under cabinetry or against trim.

But in visible areas or within decorative layouts, cutting can interrupt the pattern and the visual rhythm of the design. Many of our tiles are meant to be experienced as whole pieces, working together as a complete composition.

If your space requires specific dimensions, it’s often better to plan for the right layout from the beginning rather than adjust on site.

Visible Edges & Edge Glazing

Anywhere a tile edge will remain visible, edge glazing is recommended.

Because each tile is glazed by hand, the face is finished—but exposed edges require that same attention to create a cohesive, finished look.

If your installation includes open edges—like the end of a backsplash or a framed design—let us know during planning so we can include edge glazing where needed.

Why This Matters

Our tiles are made one at a time—pressed, glazed, and finished by hand using a process refined over decades.

That process gives them richness and variation you won’t find in mass-produced tile. But it also means they’re not interchangeable pieces in a box.

They’re parts of a whole.

When the layout is thoughtfully planned, the installation feels effortless. The pattern flows, the edges resolve, and the space feels complete.

  • How to order

To place your order from our Ann Arbor, Michigan studio, call us at 734-213-0017 or email design@motawi.com

  • How long do orders take?

The tiles for your project are custom-made. Tile production begins once your order has been placed. Please contact us for lead times.

Motawi tiles are sold by the piece. If you know the square footage you'd like to order, we can calculate the number of tiles required.

  • Why a 10% tile overage

We want to help ensure a smooth and timely installation of your project. We suggest 10% overage for all project orders to allow for better glaze range selection and to prevent delays if tiles are broken during installation. Ceramics are a moment in time and we cannot color match add-on orders, so we suggest keeping your extra tiles in case repairs are needed in the future.

  • When your order arrives

Please inspect your tile immediately upon their arrival to make sure your shipment is correct and no tiles are broken. If tile has been lost or damaged in transit, our shippers require a freight claim within five days of delivery.

  • Returns & Cancellations

Made-to-order tile returns are not accepted unless they are defective or were damaged in shipping. Once tile is in production to fulfill an order, cancellations are not accepted.

Glaze range samples in original condition have a six month return window. Shipping is the responsibility of the customer. Ship returns to: Attn: Returns 170 Enterprise Dr. Ann Arbor, MI 48103
